Exercise 1 – Add a fiscal year data source

  1. From left panel, choose Datasets.
  2. From top right, click New dataset.
  3. Choose S3 option.
  4. Enter following details and click Connect.

Data source name : Fiscal Calendar
Data source url : s3://ee-assets-prod-us-east-1/modules/337d5d05acc64a6fa37bcba6b921071c/v1/FiscalCalendarManifest.json

  1. Click x from top right of menu to close the dataset option menu. (Data source got created when we clicked connect in last step)

Exercise 2 – Duplicate SaaS-Sales dataset

  1. From Datasets view, click on SaaS-Sales dataset.
  2. From dataset menu, click Duplicate dataset button.
  3. Add -Duplicate suffix to dataset name and click Duplicate button.
  4. From new dataset’s menu, click Edit dataset button. (refresh browser if duplicate dataset is not visible)
  5. Convert the Country, City and Region fields to String.
    (Geospatial fields are not allowed in joins.)
  6. Click Save & publish / Save.

Exercise 3 – Create cross data source join

  1. Click Add data button.
  2. Select Data source from drop down.
  3. Select Fiscal Calendar Source from data source list and click Select button.
  4. Check the box against Fiscal Calendar Source from table listing and click Select button.
  5. Click the red dots to configure the join.
  6. Select Date Key field on either side in join configuration. Leave join type as left outer.
  7. Click Apply button.
  8. Click Save & publish / Save button.

Exercise 4 – Optional - Create snowflake join

  1. Click Add data button.
  2. Select Data source from drop down.
  3. Select Fiscal Calendar Source from data source list and click Select button.
  4. Check the box against Fiscal Calendar Source from table listing and click Select button.
  5. Drag the newly added table and drop it on top of earlier instance of Fiscal Calendar Source.
  6. Click the red dots to configure the join.
  7. Select Date field on both sides of join configuration.
  8. Click Apply button.
  9. From table’s menu, click Remove option.

Exercise 5 – Add filter

  1. From left panel filters section, click Add filter.
  2. Search and select Industry from field list.
  3. Expand the filter. (Click on filter / choose edit from filter menu)
  4. Change mode to Exclude.
  5. Type in value Misc in the list box.
  6. Click Apply button.
  7. Click Save & publish / Save button.

Exercise 6 – Add calculated field

  1. From left panel fields section, click Add calculated field button.
  2. Enter following name & calculation and click Save button.

Calculation name : Cost

{Sales}-{Profit}

  1. Click Save & publish / Save button.

Exercise 7 – Exclude fields

  1. From left panel, Control/Command click Date, Date Key & Date Key[Fiscal Calendar Source] fields.
  2. Open field menu and click Exclude fields. These fields will not show up in analysis field list anymore.
  3. Optional - Check Excluded fields section.
  4. Click Save & publish / Save button.
  5. Click QuickSight icon to exit dataset edit screen.

Exercise 8 – Create a child dataset

  1. From Datasets view, click on SaaS-Sales-Duplicate dataset.
  2. From dataset menu, click Use in a new dataset button.
  3. Convert the Country & City fields back to geospatial data type.
  4. Change dataset name to Saas-Sales-Child.
  5. Click Save & Publish.

Exercise 9 – Create field folder

  1. Control/Command click Order Date, Fiscal Year, Fiscal Quarter & Day Of Week fields.
  2. From field menu, select Add to folder.
  3. Enter folder name as Date and click Apply.
  4. Click Save & publish / Save button.

Exercise 10 – Create geospatial hierarchy

  1. From Country field’s menu, click Add to a hierarchy.
  2. Click Add button on the pop up (with default option - Create a new geospatial hierarchy - selected.)
  3. Change hierarchy name to Country - City.
  4. Ensure that the This hierarchy is for multiple countries option is selected and Country field is selected therein.
  5. Click Create hierarchy button
  6. From City field’s menu, click Add to a hierarchy.
  7. Change option to Add to existing geospatial hierarchy and click Add button.
  8. Click Save & publish / Save button.
  9. Click QuickSight icon to exit dataset edit screen.

Creating a multi country geospatial hierarchy lets us plot international cities directly on a point map.

Exercise 11 – Optional - Swap data set in analysis

  1. From Analyses view, click on analysis created in Build your first dashboard module.
  2. Click Save as button.
  3. Enter name as SaaS-Sales Analysis - Dataset Swap and click Save.
  4. Click on pencil icon against Dataset from left pane.
  5. Click Replace from menu choices for SaaS-Sales dataset.
  6. Choose SaaS-Sales-Child from replacement dataset list.
  7. Click Update field mapping.
  8. Click Confirm.
  9. Click x from top right of menu to close the dataset menu.

Exercise 12 – Optional - Quick check from analysis

  1. Check field list to ensure that Date folder is present.
  2. Search for Key in field list to ensure that the excluded fields are not visible.
  3. Add new sheet by clicking the + next to Sheet1 tab.
  4. From left panel visual types section, select Table.
  5. From left panel field list, click on Fiscal Year, Cost, Profit and Sales.
  6. Check to make sure that Cost calculation is correct.
  7. Click +Add and Add visual.
  8. From left panel field list, click City and Sales.
  9. Check map to confirm that international cities have been plotted.
